Body Exfoliators, Masks & Scrubs
Body exfoliators, scrubs, and masks are essential skincare treatments designed to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and deeply nourish the skin. While exfoliators and scrubs physically buff or chemically dissolve dull skin, body masks act as targeted treatments (like clay or algae) to detoxify, hydrate, and restore moisture.
These three skin-smoothing treatments are categorized by how they work and how they are used:
1. Body Exfoliators
An overarching term for any product that removes dead cells from the outer layer of your skin.
- Mechanical Exfoliators: Use physical friction (like loofahs, brushes, or finely ground seeds) to manually buff the skin.
- Chemical Exfoliators: Rely on acids like AHAs (e.g., glycolic, lactic) or BHAs (salicylic) to chemically dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells together without the need for rough scrubbing. Great for treating conditions like Keratosis Pilaris (KP bumps).
- How to Use: Gently massage onto damp skin once or twice a week to reveal brighter skin. 2. Body Scrubs
A specific type of physical exfoliant made by suspending an abrasive material (like sugar, salt, or coffee grounds) in a creamy, oily base.
- Sugar Scrubs: Gentler and highly hydrating, making them ideal for dry skin.
- Salt or Coffee Scrubs: Coarser and fantastic for removing excess oil or targeting cellulite and ingrown hairs.
- How to Use: After washing your body, apply to damp skin in gentle circular motions for up to 30 seconds, then rinse completely. It creates a smooth canvas for shaving and prepares the skin to absorb lotions better.
3. Body Masks
Intensive, nutrient-rich treatments often made with clay, mud, manuka honey, or algae. Instead of polishing away skin, a mask draws out impurities, restores hydration, and soothes inflammation.
- How to Use: Applied similarly to a clay mask for your face, you spread a generous layer over specific areas or the entire body. Leave it on for 10–20 minutes to penetrate the skin, then rinse off.
